However, the Red Trooper has customized his armor, so that it first and foremost isn't white anymore. It is red. Also, it is modified so that it is less restricting than standard stormtrooper armor. He has in addition to this added a utility belt which contains some essential equipment.

Excelling in marksmanship during Basic training, he was subsequently transferred to the Storm Commando training unit. However, he just couldn't cut it in the riot control exercises, and especially in the Cleansing "Training" missions. He came to dread the Cleansing missions, where they would usually hyperspace out to some primitive, remote planet or other, and then annihilate some alien village or other.
Eventually, one of the Emperor's Advisors that followed the Storm Commando unit around to purge any anti-Imperial sentiment claimed that his "enthusiasm was lacking in purging the anti-Imperial alien barbarians". However hard he tried, he just couldn't build up any enthusiasm for slaughtering innocents, and as punishment he was transferred back to Basic training.
Nobody said anything, but he knew that he was marked as a "furball lover". It wasn't that he exactly loved aliens, it was more that he just couldn't bring himself to hating them as much as the others seemed to do.
Everything came to a head two months later. Due to his accelerated training as a Storm Commando, he had already had live-fire "exercises", and wasn't terribly excited when the Basic unit's first live-fore exercise came up. His only error was that he didn't keep his mouth shut. When he asked a few of the others there was to be excited about in shooting unarmed civillians, the others just looked at him in an odd way. Fuming, he just wandered out of the classroom, and didn't notice the stares and whispering.
During the live-fire exercise at Yomthu IV, there was one casualty among the rookie troopers, and 56 yomthans purged for the greater glory of the New Order. The trooper had allegedly suffered a weapons malfunction, and hadn't survived the subsequent onslaught of natives. Strange that there was a blaster burn in his back, and that none of the natives had had blasters...
Mannfred survived. Waking up an hour before dusk, he barely noticed the roaring of the shuttles as they took off and sped towards the waiting cruiser orbiting the planet through the haze of pain. Dragging himself unsteadily towards the jungle surrounding the city, he was driven by some instinct stronger than pain, that screamed to him that he had to Get Away!
The orbital bombardment of the village was standard procedure, to remove any evidence, and to finish off any survivors. There was to be no Rebel scum coming from that village, at least. When the bombardment was finished, only a giant scorch mark showed where the village once had been. Due to Imperial New Order precision, however, only a couple hundred square meters of jungle was singed.
How he survived the blaster burn in his back, he wasn't quite sure. When his fever finally broke, all he knew was that he was in a jungle with barely any supplies and that his medkit was empty.
When he found a small Imperial camp in a clearing in the jungle, he decided that enough was enough.
Soon afterwards, Imperial Listening Station #54332-Yomthu ceased to exist. Replenishing his supplies, Mannfred vanished into the jungle once again. Eventually, he colored his armor red, and started to hurt the New Order in any way he could as The Red Trooper.
